From fishing village to merchant’s settlement, Dresden has started rebuilding itself to shake off its post-war image. Known as the Florence on the Elbe, the city with baroque architecture and museums has attracted many great people in the past. It's now getting ready for its 800th anniversary celebrations in the year 2006. Known for art treasures, culture, architecture and porcelain, Dresden has once again become a major sightseeing destination.
